Spring Bike Week Schedule

Thanks to the thousands who participated in Ecology Action‘s  29th Annual Spring Bike To Work program!  We look forward to bringing you the biggest Bike Week yet in Spring 2017 to honor our 30th Anniversary. Stay tuned.

2016 Bike Week Schedule (Stay Tuned for 2017):

FRIDAY, MAY 6

Bike Night First Friday at the Museum of Art & History (5pm to 9pm): First Friday Bike Night at the Museum of Art & History represents the kick-off celebration to Bike Week and is hosted by Ecology Action and Bike Santa Cruz County! Bike Night is a family-friendly, inclusive experience for community members to learn about local bike resources and celebrate biking in Santa Cruz. The event features a host of activities including:

  • Celebration activities include free helmets, spin bike art, bike decorating, and helmet stenciling
  • Local artists bike themed art fair, with art and crafts for sale from Totally Tubular and Campbell Steers; Artist Doug Ross will also be showcasing his artwork
  • Live music from 6:30-9pm courtesy of Dan P. & the Bricks: A 10 piece, local ska band including a 5 piece horn section, two guitars, organ, bass and drums! More details here.
  • Renowned local bike builders will be hosting a meet-and-greet opportunity, showcasing their newest creations
  • Spokesman Bicycles will be providing delicious ice-cream treats courtesy of their ice-cream bike and more!
  • Free electric bike rides courtesy of Blix Electric Bikes
  • An 8pm Community Bike Ride. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated bike!

Come meet other bike enthusiasts in our community and treat yourself to a free celebratory bike powered smoothie or ice cream. Sign-in at our check-in tables for the chance to win a Blix Electric Bike! 

SATURDAY, MAY 7

Rail Cleanup (10am to Noon): Join Friends of the Rail & Trail and Save Our Shores for a cleanup along the railroad tracks from east of San Lorenzo River Trestle to 17th Avenue. There will be 2 check-in locations including: (1) Meet at intersection of Seabright and Murray St and (2) Meet at Simpkins Swim Center at the far end near Schwan Lake entrance. The tracks are in need of a cleanup and Save Our Shores will be providing all cleanup supplies including buckets, bags, latex gloves, grabbers and more. But feel free to bring your own gloves and cleanup tools. Friends of the Rail & Trail will be on site providing information on the proposed 32-mile Rail Trail from Davenport to Watsonville with this segment being a central piece of the paved path. Girly Mountain Bike Ride (10am): Hosted by Epicenter Cycling, this fun ladies mountain bike ride is a great opportunity to make new friends and get out on some of the best trails in Santa Cruz. The ride is open to all skill levels and ride leaders ride at your pace and comfort level. Meet at their Santa Cruz store on Mission Street. For more ride details visit their website.

SUNDAY, MAY 8

Bike & Bird Group Tour (9am to 1pm): Join The Bird School Project, a local environmental education organization, for a day of birding and biking adventures! They will have a handful of the county’s brightest young birders showing you the best places in town to watch birds and connect with the natural world. This group ride will include biking to bird hotspots such as Natural Bridges, Antonelli Pond, Neary Lagoon, and West Cliff Drive, stopping at each place for a guided bird walk before biking to the next stop. This is a family-friendly event and open to all ages. Come prepared with water, sun protection, snacks and of course your bike. Make sure to also bring a lock during pit stops.  MONDAY, MAY 9

Bike-In Movie Night (7-9pm): Hosted by Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, this fun family-friendly movie night will feature the fan favorite Goonies! Bike on over for yummy snacks, a good movie and some fun socializing. Participate to win a Blix Electric Bike!

TUESDAY, MAY 10

Cycle & Dine: Ecology Action has partnered with a number of restaurants throughout Santa Cruz County to provide all you wonderful cyclists with discounts on your meal. Be ready to show your helmet to your server upon arrival and ask for the ‘Cycle & Dine’ discount! Participating restaurants include:

WEDNESDAY, MAY 11

Gear Up Day: Ecology Action has partnered with a number of local bike shops throughout Santa Cruz to provide you with discounts on bike gear! Whether you need a new light, a helmet, even a bike, cruise by any of the following bike shops on this day to receive a 10-25% discount on select bike gear items. You don’t need to bike to the shops but when you arrive make sure the sales team knows you’re there for “Gear Up Day”. Participating bike shops include:

THURSDAY, MAY 12

Bike To Work/School Day (6:30am-9:30am): Visit our Breakfast Site page for a complete list of our 13 public breakfast sites across Santa Cruz County and our 45+ participating school sites. Cyclists will be able to receive a free breakfast, free bike maintenance, raffle prizes and more! Participate to win a Blix Electric Bike

 FRIDAY, MAY 13

Bike Party Group Ride (7-9pm): Santa Cruz Bike Party will be leading a family-friendly group ride! Meet at the Bike Church at 703 Pacific Ave in Santa Cruz. The theme for this ride is BIKE PROM! So dust off those sequin dresses and suspenders and join the fancy bike parade. Costumes are of course not required. Ride details will be posted on their website at least 1 week out from the ride.
